| Epirus |
 |
The region of Epirus, on the northwest
edge of Greece is perfect for people who want to combine beach and
culture. It is well known that this region has the best nature in
all of Greece. The combination of green mountains and blue sea is
beautiful, inland there is also alot of cultural and historical
sightseeing to do. Epirus is shaped by the Pindus mountain range
which gradually sweeps down westward towards the Ionion Sea. The
highest point is 2600 meters, here is the Vikos-Aoos National Park.
Deep valleys such as the well-known Vikos Gorge are crossed by rivers
like the Kalama and Acheronta, famed for their natural beauty.
|
Epirus is divided into four prefectures
Ioannina, Arta, Preveza and Thesprotia. We are in the Thesprotia,
here the coastline has a few steep beaches and many large and small
bays, this region of Greece is justifiably known as 'Thesprotia
of good ports'.
Igoumenitsa is the capital of the region
and is today one of the most important harbours, not only in Greece,
but also in Europe.

| Perdika
Village |
On the coastal road between Sivota
and Parga lies the beautiful town of Perdika, which is the largest
traditional village in Thesprotia.
The majority of locals are involved in agriculture
and in the production of olive oil. An authentic Hellenic atmosphere
prevails, as tourism has not played a major role in the town's past.
|
 |
| Idyllic,
attractive, and truly magical, the whole area with its beaches, small
islands and archeology is a unique experience for visitors. |
There is a folklore museum and
an amphitheatre, which is used for many occassions, including Perdika's
cultural festival which starts at the beginning of July and lasts
for 1½months. Events ranging from children's shows, sporting
events and cultural theatre ensure that all ages are involved.

| The Wildlife
Park at St. Athanasios |
 |
Along Perdika's Paramithioti River,
which runs past the monastery of St. Athanasios and enters the Ionion
Sea at Karavostasi Beach, there is a new Wildlife Park. It covers
an area of about 3500 hectares at Lakka, Arapi-Soulpa and Somati.
Visitors can choose to stroll along the riverbank or go uphill (699
steps) to look out points.
|
The river crossings and footpaths
are protected by wooden railings and every so often there are seating
areas and kiosks for breaks. Dams make sure that there is plenty
of drinking water for the animals and ensure a good environment
for fish and other aquatic life. In the near future the paths will
begin at Karavostasi Beach, taking you along the river, to the Wildlife
Park and up to the archaeological site of Elina (400 BC) on Dimokastro
mountain, and an old watermill will be fully restored. This is a
journey through Perdika's wonderful landscape. This part of Thesprotia,
like alot of other places, was once full of wild animals, birds
and fish. Thanks to efforts of the community, wildlife has been
restored to its natural surroundings, where, under protection, it
will prosper. There are:
|
- Deer
- Wild pig
- Swans
- Ducks
- Grouse
|
- Geese
- Pheasants
- Peacocks
- and various other types of birds and fish
